Circles Squared

I might just have to buy the summer 2010 issue of Interweave Crochet for this block:

One of the first five blocks featured for the Chain Reaction Afghan Project (I have no idea what that is...) by Kathy Merrick.

ETA:  OMG, this too, THIS TOO:
The Lodestar Tunic by Natasha Robarge.

Like I even have yarn to make it... but it's so gorgeous, ah!

I LOOOOOOVE that granny square! I'm going to stare at it until I figure out how to make it...

Do you think all the circles are made separately and then sewn together? Or are they crocheted already stuck together? They're probably sewn together, which I find slightly disappointing...

I know, I was thinking the same thing! I don't need no stinkin directions.

Actually, it looks like they're crocheted together. Look at the top left, the blue and white?

And you think it's layered, or just a single 8 petal/circle flower with a 4 circle border. (Like, are they all on the same layer, or is it more 3D ish? I'd say all on the same layer.) They look just like little granny daughters. UH OH HEXAGON DAUGHTER REMIX VERSION ASAP!

Hmm. Some of them look like they're on the same layer, but like the light blue one in the left of the flower looks like it's on top of the white one next to it. And seeing as I don't think I have the crocheting knowhow to crochet them all together, I'd probably just sew them. That'd take so long, though, if you were making a lot of them...

A hexagon version would be pretty beast, you should get on it!

Maybe they're just squished together, or no actually, they might have joined them on the bottom/underneath to give it a more 3D effect. (Affect? Pah.) Yeah, sewing them would take too long; they might be joined through the back loop.

Hmmm, hexagons yes! Maybe a hex in the middle, and it looks like triangles for the petals, than more hexes for the outside border? I'd do it in a better color than this one, this is just confusing. :b Is that a flower or not, ah!
